Qualitative Spatial Reasoning in Interpreting Text and Narrative

چکیده

Simple natural language texts and narratives often raise problems in commonsense spatial knowledge and reasoning of surprising logical complexity and geometric richness. In this paper, I consider a dozen short texts — five taken from literature, the remainder contrived as illustrations — and discuss the spatial reasoning involved in understanding them. I conclude by summarizing their common features, and by tentatively drawing some morals for research in this area. The spatial issues that arise in these particular texts fall into three broad categories: • Fitting objects into containers. • Blocking, pursuing, escaping, and hiding. • Manipulating household objects; in particular, buttons and cords. I conclude by summarizing the common features of the spatial inferences involved here, and by tentatively drawing some morals for research in this area.

Qualitative and Quantitative Examination of Text Type Readabilities: A Comparative Analysis

This study compared 2 main approaches to readability assessment. Thequantitative approach applied idea density based on part of speech tagging andcompared 3 sets of text types (i.e., narrative, expository, and argumentative) withrespect to their ease of reading. The qualitative approach was done throughdeveloping questionnaires measuring intermediate EFL learners’ perceptions oncontent, motivat...

Characterising Semantic Relatedness using Interpretable Directions in Conceptual Spaces

Various applications, such as critique-based recommendation systems and analogical classifiers, rely on knowledge of how different entities relate. In this paper, we present a methodology for identifying such semantic relationships, by interpreting them as qualitative spatial relations in a conceptual space. In particular, we use multi-dimensional scaling to induce a conceptual space from a rel...

SparQ - A Spatial Reasoning Toolbox

SparQ is a toolbox for qualitative spatial reasoning. Interpreting reasoning in a broad sense, SparQ covers mapping information from quantitative to qualitative, applying constraint reasoning to qualitative information, reasoning about calculi, and mapping qualitative information back to the quantitative domain. The toolbox is designed for extensibility and released under the GNU GPL public lic...

Using Narrative Function to Extract Qualitative Information from Natural Language Texts

The naturalness of qualitative reasoning suggests that qualitative representations might be an important component of the semantics of natural language. Prior work showed that framebased representations of qualitative process theory constructs could indeed be extracted from natural language texts. That technique relied on the parser recognizing specific syntactic constructions, which had limite...

Interpreting Iranian Architecture in The Post-Revolutionary Period with Interaction Model of Tectonic and Stereotomic Theory Approaches

Since tectonic and stereotomic theories have neither been used systematically nor dealt with simultaneously for the interpretation of architecture, by explaining the theoretical position of critics and their thoughts, the process of their interaction will be more effective. The main questions asked is it possible to interpret architecture through the interaction of tectonic and stereotomical th...
